The Story Behind Genuine Pearls: From Ocean to Jewellery

Every pearl has a story. Long before it finds its way into a necklace or a pair of earrings, it begins as a tiny grain of sand or an irritant that enters the shell of a living mollusc. What follows is one of nature's most remarkable processes — and the result is a gemstone unlike any other.

How a Pearl Forms

When a foreign particle enters a mollusc's shell, the creature responds by secreting layers of nacre — a combination of calcium carbonate and a protein called conchiolin — around the irritant. Over months or even years, these layers build up, creating the smooth, luminous sphere we know as a pearl. The more layers deposited, the thicker and more valuable the pearl becomes.

This is why genuine pearls are so rare in nature. Most molluscs never produce a pearl at all, and those that do often produce only one in their lifetime. Cultured pearls — the kind used in most fine jewellery today — are created by intentionally introducing a nucleus into the mollusc, but the process still takes considerable time and skill.

Freshwater vs Saltwater Pearls

Pearls are broadly categorised by the environment in which they are grown:

• Freshwater pearls are grown in rivers and lakes, primarily in China. They are typically smaller and more affordable, but can exhibit extraordinary colours and shapes. Edison pearls — a type of large freshwater pearl — are prized for their size and vivid hues.
• Saltwater pearls are grown in oceans and seas. Akoya pearls (Japan), South Sea pearls (Australia), and Tahitian pearls (French Polynesia) are among the most coveted saltwater varieties, known for their exceptional lustre and size.

The Role of the Pearl Farmer

Pearl farming is a patient and skilled craft. Farmers carefully select molluscs, implant nuclei with precision, and then tend to the pearls over months or years — protecting them from predators, monitoring water quality, and harvesting at exactly the right moment. Each pearl is then graded by size, shape, colour, lustre, and surface quality before it reaches a jeweller.
