Our Story

Our Story

Every pearl begins as something small and unremarkable — a grain of sand, a fragment of shell, an irritant inside a living mollusc. What follows is one of nature's most extraordinary acts of transformation. Layer by layer, the mollusc wraps the intruder in nacre, building something luminous and enduring over months or years. The result is a gemstone unlike any other: organic, irreplaceable, and entirely its own.

At Yorkshire Pearls, we believe jewellery should carry that same quality — something made with patience, intention, and a deep respect for the materials.

Handcrafted in Yorkshire

Each piece in our collection is designed and handcrafted in Yorkshire by Tasha and Laura, where we take the time to work with genuine pearls rather than synthetic alternatives. No two pearls are identical — each carries the unique imprint of its origin, its environment, and the mollusc that created it. That individuality is something we celebrate, not standardise away.

We design pieces that honour the pearl's natural character: its lustre, its shape, its colour. Whether that means a classic drop earring or a sculptural statement ring, the pearl is always the centrepiece. Designing pieces that have an alternative style, and something new and interesting for the market.

Genuine Pearls, Sourced with Integrity

We work exclusively with genuine pearls — freshwater, saltwater, Edison, Tahitian, and South Sea — sourced with care and traceability.

  • Freshwater pearls are grown in rivers and lakes, prized for their extraordinary range of colours and shapes.
  • Akoya Pearls are grown in Japan and are known for their stunning shine and high lustre.
  • Edison pearls are a premium variety of large freshwater pearl, celebrated for their vivid hues and exceptional size.
  • Tahitian pearls are grown in the lagoons of French Polynesia, known for their deep, dramatic tones — from midnight black to peacock green.
  • South Sea pearls are among the rarest and most coveted in the world, grown in the warm waters of Australia and Southeast Asia.

Pearl farming is a patient and skilled craft. Farmers carefully select molluscs, implant nuclei with precision, and tend to the pearls over months or years — monitoring water quality, protecting against predators, and harvesting at exactly the right moment. Each pearl is then graded by size, shape, colour, lustre, and surface quality before it reaches us.

We take that provenance seriously. Every pearl we use has been selected for quality, and every piece we make is designed to last.

Quality & Care

Genuine pearls are organic gemstones, and they reward a little care. We recommend keeping pearl jewellery away from perfume, hairspray, and harsh chemicals, and storing pieces separately to avoid surface scratches. Wipe gently with a soft cloth after wearing. Treated with care, a pearl piece becomes something you pass on.

All our packages come with a care sheet and a soft microfiber cloth for you to take care of your precious pieces.

Every Yorkshire Pearls piece is finished to the highest standard — inspected by hand before it leaves us, and presented ready to wear or gift.
